First Time on a Business Trip? Here's What You Need

Sooner or later, we all have to go on that business trip for the very first time. While it is certainly a bit exciting and a refreshing break from our otherwise mundane office lives, it can also be quite confusing; what are you supposed to pack, how soon should you start to plan out the trip, and what are you even expected to be wearing?

It would, after all, be a bit nightmare-ish to arrive at that conference in an entirely different city or another country, only to realise that you’re wearing the opposite of what everyone else is wearing. It’s not like you can just pop back home to change anytime soon either.

Here is a handful of tips for that first business trip so that you can feel a bit more confident about the journey. As it is with everything in business, confidence is definitely the key to making it a success.

First: Make travel and accommodation arrangements

The longer you wait, the more expensive those tickets and accommodation costs will be. You might as well get the booking over with as soon as you know about the trip - but give yourself a bit of time to shop around first as well. You can have a look at at this Cardiff accommodation, for example, in case you’re lucky enough to be heading off to this city.

If you’re going to a different country, it’s a good idea to take any religious or national holidays into consideration as well. That way, you won’t have to arrive in a city that is basically closed for an entire day or two - and you can enjoy the trip without any hiccups that could have easily been avoided.

Remember to book everything else you might need in advance, by the way, such as car rentals to and from the airport. The closer the accommodation you book is to the airport, the cheaper this will be, though.

Next: Only pack what you need

While you might be a bit nervous about not packing enough, it’s always better to keep your luggage as light as possible. Make sure that you pack the basics, such as clothes, toiletries, laptops, and charges, and leave everything else at home. This is a trip that is meant to be for business purposes, after all, and you definitely won’t be needing your swimsuit for this occasion.

Keep your outfit basic, first of all, and comfortable enough to be sitting in during those long meetings. Remember to bring any office supplies you might need as well, though, such as business cards and some notepads.

Finally, all that is left to do is to remember to have a bit of fun while travelling as well. While this is a trip that is meant for business purposes, it is also a great opportunity to build relationships with your colleagues and even make a few new contacts.

You’re not going to do this unless you’re friendly and a bit fun so try to enjoy the trip and make the most of it - you’ll be back in the office before you know it.
